Taranna is a quiet township north of Port Arthur Historic Site on the Tasman Peninsula. By car you head south east of Hobart for around 1.5 hours (circa 89 kilometres).
Main attractions in Taranna are the Tasmanian Devil Park, a cluster of accommodation of various types, and the Federation Chocolate outlet. It is known that Taranna was the terminus for a railway which ran between the jetty at Little Norfolk Bay and the prison during the height of the Port Arthur prison. This railway saved the ships the hazardous journey around Cape Raoul and enabled the passengers and the supplies unloaded in Norfolk Bay to be transported by Rail. The railway itself has a place in Australian history known to be the first railway in Australia.
No matter what time of year you visit, bring a warm jacket and all weather gear when visiting the area since The weather on the Tasman Peninsula is affected by the winds coming off Frederick Henry Bay.
