Four wheel driving ( 4 WD) on beaches is a popular recreational activity in Australia and the Great Lakes and Greater Taree areas offer several beaches for you to enjoy this recreational sport.  However you are not allowed to take your vehicle on the beach without a permit. Beach Vehicle Permits are available from various locations throughout the regions.

Drive on beaches with a permit in the Great Lakes area (published on the Great Lakes council website as at 15th July 2013) with 4wd beach access;

Tuncurry Beach – Access end of Beach Street Tuncurry or Hallidays Point Bowling Club
Length: 11.5 kms
0.2 km north corner closed to all vehicles
0.8 kms south end closed to all vehicles
Remainder 10.5 kms restricted to permit

Sandbar Beach – Access near shop at Sandbar Caravan Park
Length: 2.8 kms
1.2 kms north end of access point closed to all vehicles. Southern end open to permit holders all year

Seal Rocks Boat Beach – Access centre of beach
Length: 0.4 kms
Open to boat launching vehicles only – trailers must be attached to the vehicle
ALL other vehicles prohibited. Open to Pro Fish when beach hauling

Seal Rocks Number One Beach – Access eastern end
Length: 1.1 kms
Professional Fisher vehicles approved for beach hauling only (permit required)
ALL other vehicles prohibited

Hawks Nest Bennetts Beach – Access opposite Jimmy’s Beach Caravan Park OR near Hawks Nest Golf Club
Length: 6.5 kms
3.7 kms northern access
1.7 kms southern access
Access Points
North of surf club – access point near Hawks Nest Golf Club – open to permit holders
South of surf club – access opposite Jimmy’s Beach Caravan Park – only open to holders of
restricted permits
1.1  km adjacent to Surf Club,

Jimmy’s Beach – Access end of Tuloa Street locked gate
Length: 3.9 km
Open to professional fisherman only when activity engaged in fishing
ALL other vehicles prohibited
Jimmy’s Beach is defined from Barnes Rock (south end of The Boulevard) to 1 km from Jimmy’s Beach Caravan Park in an east direction
