Australia is a paradise for those visitors and tourists who love the
beaches, love swimming and surfing. While the sea and the waterways are
there for you to enjoy and have fun, it is always advisable to take
proper precautions and practice safe swimming and surfing guidelines for
your safety as well as for the safety of others who have joined you on
holiday. It is always good to learn swimming or at least learn to float
for your own safety. After all you need to return home with wonderful
memories of your holiday. Check out some of our tips on how to be safe
around our Australia beaches and waterways.
- It is advisable to swim or surf at the beaches which are patrolled by lifesavers.
- When you are at a patrolled beach, always swim within the red and
yellow flags. A red flag with “Danger” written indicates that it is not
safe to swim, surf or bath. Should not enter the water if you see this
flag. An Amber coloured flag indicates the surf is dangerous. - Remember not to swim or surf directly after a meal.
- You should never swim or surf after consuming alcohol.
- If you are caught in a rip or strong current, swim diagonally
across. Do not panic, raise one arm to signal help. If you are getting
tired and cannot swim, just float until help arrives. - If you get a cramp, keep the affected area still, raise your arm calling for help and float until help arrives.
- The surf lifesavers could ask you to come out of the water if they
suspect any imminent danger. Do follow their instructions immediately. - Lastly, if you are in a group and a member decides not to take a
dip, you should request the person to keep an eye on others who are in
the water. He or she could raise an alarm if any other member of the
group in the water gets into difficulty.
